Her diverse music has earned her the title of "atypical pop star". [9] After being enthralled by Spanish folk music at age 13, she studied musicology at the Catalonia College of Music while performing in bars and weddings. She was able to complete her studies with honors by virtue of her collaborative cover album together with Raul Refree, Los Angeles (2017), and the baccalaureate project El Mal Querer (2018). Reimagining flamenco through mixing it with hip-hop and pop music, it produced the hit singles "Malamente" as well as "Pienso in the Mirror" which attracted the attention of the Spanish general public, and released to widespread critical acclaim. Recognized as the winner of the Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and a place in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, El Mal Querer started the rise of Rosalia into the world music scene. Rosalia, who explored urbano music with her 2019 releases "Con Altura" and "Yo Ti Tu x Mi", has achieved worldwide success. Her third album, Motomami (2022), she gave reggaeton an innovative style, straying slightly from the flamenco sound of the first. The album gained international attention with its singles "La Fama" and "Saoko" and was subsequently the album that received the highest rating of the year on Metacritic. Through her career, Rosalia has accumulated ten top-ten singles in her home country, the most for an artist from the country. Two Grammy Awards, eleven Latin Grammy Awards (including 2 Album of the Year nominations), four MTV Video Music Awards and three UK Music Video Awards have been awarded to Rosalia. She also was awarded two Premio Ruido Awards. Billboard presented her with the Rising Star Award, in 2019 for "changing the sound today's mainstream music with her distinctive flamenco pop". 18 years ago, she also became the first Spanish-singing group to be nominated as the Best New Artist at the Grammys. Rosalia was born on 25 September 1992 in Sant Cugat del Valles and raised in Sant Esteve Sesrovires,[20][21][22] Baix Llobregat, Catalonia. The family she was born into has no artistic heritage, she is the youngest daughter of Pilar Tobella, a businesswoman who has a family-owned business which specializes in metalworks. Jose Manuel Vila was her father. He was born in Cudillero (Asturias). The couple split in 2019. [23] Her older sister, Pilar Vila ("born 1989") is her stylist and creative brain. Rosalia was fascinated by performing arts from the age of five. She discovered the discography of Camaron De la Isla. She started her musical education at Taller de Musics. She took part in a 6-year program at the academy. She began in the Raval school, then moved to the Superior School of Music of Catalonia. Additionally, she performed on her own, singing at weddings, bars for music and other events. She was paid "a less than 80 euros or as a payment for dinner". The time was also a time when, Rosalia met many underground Spanish artists who would later succeed such as La Zowi, Yung Beef, Kaydy Cain, Hinds and Maria Escarmiento.
